INSIGHT AND INTRODUCTORY ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN AND FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENTS OF THE EDUCATION SYSTEM
Abstract
Since the primary purpose of an education system as a whole is to provide education to students, this paper, as the first part of a larger study, is devoted to a detailed analysis of the size of general education schools, teachers and students who form the basis of the entire education system. The paper analyses up to date available almost 2800 data entries from Latvian National Education Information System about general education institutions, which are maintained by municipalities from 2019 - 2023. Statistical methods were used to analyze different data, which includes years, municipalities, students and teachers. Particular attention in the analysis is paid to the characteristics of the education system, such as the number of institutions, students and teachers, as well as their mutual proportions and the amount of teachers' salaries over a mentioned five-year period both from overall and regional perspective. The focus of the study is on the average number of students in an institution, which is a way to increase the potential for sustainable environmental management since fewer resources are spent per student. The analysis showed that, despite the overall increase in the number of students by 2.6% and the reduction of general education institutions by 7.2%, there is a clear trend of an increase in the average number of students per educational institution over 5 years by 10.7%, with the greatest growth observed in gymnasiums (+30.2%) and basic schools (+29.2%). There have also been significant changes in the structure of educational institutions. At the same time, teachers' salaries have increased by a whopping 60.3% across the country. Based on the results of this research, further study will be conducted, including actual amounts of expenses by economical classification categories for a more detailed analysis and continuous development of a resource management model in the education system.
