DETERMINATION OF INDEX OF BIOAVAILABILITY AND BIOACCUMULATION COEFFICIENT FOR AS AND ZN - ANTHROPOGENIC SEDIMENT FROM IMPOUNDMENTS
Abstract
The processes of weathering and dissolution of the impoundment sediments have a significant impact on mobility and availability of trace elements such as arsenic and zinc. They can become dangerous sources of contamination for the surrounding ecosystem. The focus of this study is coal ash impoundment near the village Po\vsa, the drainage water contaminating surface waters and sediments of the Kyjov Brook and Ondava River. Results of chemical analysis show significant contamination by arsenic and zinc. Maximum concentration values of As and Zn were observed in stream sediments bellow the impoundment and were extremely high and reached for arsenic 3208.35 mg.kg-1 and zinc 3389.67 mg.kg-1. The presence of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides and incidentally the amount of sulphides plays an important role in terms of mobility and bioavailability of arsenic and zinc. To determine bioaccumulation plant capability and estimate the bioavailable portion of As and Zn release from sediments, the accumulation coefficients and indices were calculated. Experiments showed up to 1814.41 mg.kg-1 Zn able to leach into solution in a bioavailable form. Some plants such as Ceratophyllum demersum (Rigid Hornwort), wherein up to 573.8 mg.kg-1 Zn was determined, show significant signs of accumulation. High concentrations of arsenic have been reported in plants Typha latifolia and Phragmites australis.
