Abstract

The pastoralism, with tradition in the history of the Romanian people, embraces various forms. In this viewpoint, the entrance with animals on pasture is linked to the Orthodox religious holiday, Saint George, celebrated on the 23rd of April. In the Romanian people tradition, too, the entrance with animals on the pasture is carried out in spring, after the flowering of the blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.) present in protection belts or green fences that delimitate parcels in the studied area. Under such circumstances, this paperwork attempts to analyze the grassland vegetation in the West of Romania in correlation with the orographic and climatic factors during the months from the first part of the year (Mar., April), in order to determine a correlation between temperature, grazing height of the Festuca valesiaca species and the Romanian myths/traditions related to the beginning of the pastoral year. The heartening results of this study converge to promotion and encouraging of the traditional activities, and also of the durable ones that do not exert a negative environmental impact; also they lead to the awareness and education of communities on the cultural heritage values of pastoralism in Romania.
