ANALYZING THE SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHY OF BADENIAN DEPOSITS IN THE EAST EUROPEAN PLATFORM
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the geological and geophysical features of the Badenian deposits in the Moldavian Petroleum System, especially those of evaporitic main seal formations. The Moldavian Platform, Romanian sector of the East European Platform, is the oldest platform unit in Romania. Its Western limit sinks beneath the Pericarpathian area following the NNW-SSE Paltinoasa Fault alignment. The Southern Moldavian Platform is separated from the Schythian Platform by a WNW-ESE fault [3]. We used well data and seismic images correlations for a better understanding of the extension, shape and thickness of the Badenian evaporitic episode. The anhydrite marker is present in a large number of wells in Moldavian Platform. It is extended from the Prut River until under the Outer Carpathians and from the Northern border till the Trotus Fault in the South. The seismic image of this marker is very clear, a strong amplitude reflection of low to medium frequency, continuity over the entire mentioned area. The tectonics of the base Neogene, the NW-SE regional faults with visible variable step, the W-E cross-faults with the sediments into a network of blocks [2], are very clear on the Badenian marker structural map. Facies variations of the Badenian are considered favorable for stratigraphic traps. Gas from the Badenian reservoirs are known in the Malini Field. Under Badenian seal, more faulted anticlines structures are still undrilled. The Badenian Anhydrite horizon covers almost the entire Moldavian Platform. It was very useful in the correlation between the wells and seismic data and in time/depth conversion. Where velocity measurements were not available, the Badenian marker has been helpful in calculating the average or interval velocities.
