ACCURATE ASSESSMENT OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIVIDUAL OXYGEN / COMPRESSED AIR BREATHING EQUIPMENT IN TOXIC / EXPLOSIVE / FLAMMABLE ENVIRONMENTS
Abstract
Despite all technical and technological advances, most industries are experiencing damage resulting in human casualties and property damage. Thus, the presence of special intervention and rescue teams at economic agent’s units is essential to limit / eliminate damage that generates toxic / explosive / flammable environments and rescue those caught in such events. The intervention activity in such special conditions can be carried out exclusively by trained and authorized personnel in this respect, personnel using individual respiratory protection equipment. The decisive factor in ensuring the success of an intervention and rescue operation in toxic / explosive / flammable environments lies in the use of reliable individual respiratory protection equipment, in perfect working order, whose characteristics are identical to those predetermined. Certainty as to the fulfilment of these requirements may be obtained only after implementing periodic inspection methods to accurately assess the characteristics of this type of personal respiratory equipment. Lately, at national level, a wide variety of equipment, respectively compressed air / compressed oxygen respiratory protective equipment has been purchased, either from inland, or mainly, from foreign manufacturers, having therefore characteristics differing from each other. The current paper presents the optimal method of inspection, verification and precise evaluation of the performance of positive pressure respirators, represented by the use of a complex testing equipment, in accordance with international principles and practices.
