CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION MEASURES FOR RURAL SPACE -THE AGRICULTURAL APPROACH
Abstract
The impact of climate changes on rural areas will take place in the context of many and dynamic political, economic, social, and land-use trends, the focus being on water supply, food security, agricultural incomes and rural infrastructure. Adapting rural areas to climate changes challenges is not an easy task and involves complex and multi-dimensional processes which are developed at different scales. Adopting and implementing adaptation measures for a climate smart and resilient rural space is only a stage (which specifically addresses the rural development challenges magnified by climate changes) in the process of achieving sustainable developed rural areas. This rural development dimension of adapting to climate changes must be approached in framework which also includes aspects like sensitivity, exposure, vulnerability, resilience, mitigation. Agriculture is an economic sector where climate change adaptation will require complex measures approached from different angles and different perspectives. Agricultural activities are, by nature, prone to risks and uncertainties of various natures. Thus, the processes of adaptation and/ or transformation should take in consideration that many of these risks have a climatic component and most of them will be affected by climate change, either in intensity, scope or frequency. This paper will present and analyze several climate change adaptation measures for rural space using an agricultural perspective.
