GLOBAL EXPERIENCE IN THE USE OF SODA WASTE
Abstract
The problem of reducing the negative environmental impact of soda ash production wastes using the ammonia method is relevant for all countries with such production. Therefore, the objective of this work was to summarize and analyze the experience of Russian researchers and foreign scientists in using existing technologies and methods of using soda ash production waste. The secondary use of this waste solves several problems at once. On the one hand, it reduces the negative impact of accumulated waste on the components of the natural environment by reducing the stored volumes, and on the other hand, involving this material in the production cycle allows obtaining additional material and energy resources. For this purpose it is necessary to use the best available technologies. The production of soda ash results in the formation of liquid sludge, a distillery liquid, which is accumulated in special settling tanks called white seas. These accumulators cover an area of several square kilometers and are located near the soda industry. Therefore, waste disposal is a very important environmental task. At present, the Russian Federation and the world have experience in using these wastes: for reclamation of disturbed lands, as additives for obtaining various construction materials and as a soil base for backfilling the territory. Despite a wide range of applications for soda production wastes, the problem of their utilization remains urgent. Even with the existing volume of soda production, the volumes of distillery liquid are quite high, and implementation of utilization methods requires certain costs. Active recycling of waste at the present stage is constrained by the lack of mass processing technologies, development of which is possible only on the basis of knowledge about composition and properties of waste, its spatial and temporal changes, nature and orientation of processes leading to changes in composition and properties.
