Abstract

The paper presents results of experimental study of microstructural changes in rock specimens under the effect of high pulse pressure due to shock waves. Specimens of strong rock and coal were placed into special steel preservation ampoules. Shock waves were generated by explosion of trotyl blocks. The study involved electron microscopy, micro- and nanoindentation and laser spectroscopy of particle size. Images of specimen surface fragments were obtained by electron microscopy at various scale levels before and after impact. Micro- and nanoindentation was used to evaluate degree of geomaterial structural heterogeneity and to detect inclusions. Microparticle size distribution was assessed by laser spectroscopy. It was found that particles of several mcm make a maximum proportion in distribution among 0.1 to 10mcm particles in most geomaterials. It was also established that coal prone to gas dynamic events responded actively to dynamical impact. This is a consequence of certain structural and physico-chemical properties and manifestation of bound methane release. Specimens of outburst-prone coal after dynamical impact were characterized by predominance of submicron (about 0.1 mcm) particles reaching about 80% of the entire content. The study findings were used to improve concepts of generation of micro- and nanoparticles under high pulse pressure on rock mass associated with unconventional technologies of mining.
