ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY EDUCATION IN BUILDING INDUSTRY THROUGH UNCONVENTIONAL TEACHING TECHNIQUES
Abstract
Compared with other industries, construction is one of those that actually give contribution to the gradual damage of the environment and is one of the most dangerous sectors in field of occupational health and sa fety. Construction process at the site is not by nature environmentally fr iendly activity and all the s ector is one of the most physically demanding and risky sectors. Many existing researches suggest that construction activity is one of the major contributors to the environmental impacts which are typically classified as air polluti on, noise pollution, soil, water, fauna and flora pollution and waste generation. Ther efore, the environmental impact of construction is now an important and relevant issue. All the same, despite recent efforts to improve site safety, construction still accounts for a disproportionate number of occupational-related fatalities. One of the effective ways to reduce environmental impact of construction works and to improve health and safety c onditions at the site rests in better environmental and safety education of people in the sector. The paper describes our experience with integrated environmental and safety education of construction workers and site managers fr om construction company and students of Civil engineering faculty. They took the courses where some unconventional teaching methods (in particular case studies and audio-visual methods) were applied. There were activities centered to learners, their creating and indivi dual approach to solving of problems. The activities were based on topics that demonstrate theo retical concepts in an applied setting. Such method of education is not based on legislation memorizing, it develops awareness and inculcates conscious ness to the people about the environment so they have more ideas of how they could help preserve it, protect it and enhance their participation in promoting a ll means of positive ways that could benefit them and their environment. All the same using of authenti c audio and visual information about real events bring more inte nsive optical, acoustic and sensati onal perception, what leads to better education in field of health and safety prevention. Hence, it is not just about learning, it about understanding the environm ental and safety issues and changing workers behaviors so they can build a sustainable world for the future and a healthy and safe working environment at the site. There is anticipation for the creation of sense of environmental and safety responsibility in each worker in the site.
