Abstract

Floods are one of the most frequent natural disasters in Slovakia. The suggestions of flood protection measures were already taken by our ancestors many centuries ago. During the recent years, the attention of public and professionals, as a result of floods in Slovakia, is markedly focused on the possibilities for effective protection against the harmful effects of this negative natural phenomenon. One of the flood protection measures to protect towns and villages, or other important buildings, is a realization of dry reservoirs, called polders, situated in a river basin above the protected area. A large amount of funds was invested in flood protection in Slovakia, mainly in the second half of the 20th century. Despite these investments, it is not possible to guarantee complete protection of the area against floods, for the provision of which it would be necessary to invest many times more funds. In this paper we want to focus on the findings gained from operation of eleven anti-flood polders, which were built in 2015 in the territory of the former military area called Javorina, located in the northeast of Slovakia, in terms of technical and safety supervision. During the five-year operation of these water structures, several flash flood flows occurred in the area of interest, thanks to which it was possible to observe to a certain extent the efficiency and safe operability of individual polders. The article summarizes in an informative way all the observed facts that were observed at the time of the existence of the observed polders
