SEALING SOLUTIONS FOR COMPLIANT LANDFILL FOUNDATION, ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN OPERATING AND AFTER CLOSING A LANDFILL
Abstract
The paper presents solutions for the sealing of the foundation plate inside a compliant landfill, the conditions necessary for the selection of certain materials in execution. Geometry of landfills (shape and dimensions in horizontal and vertical planes) often follows the site's orography, is influenced by the hydrogeology of the underground profile (groundwater level, inadequate or rocky land and difficulties with excavation), stability in the slope for the maximum possible weight (also related to the angle of settlement/stability of the waste), ensuring the stability of the sealing/separating or draining layers and of course, the financial possibilities. It is important to emphasize that when the compliant landfill serves large urban areas (large volumes of waste resulting), the possible loading in the vertical plane influences proportionally the required deposit area. This is particularly important because the activity of a landfill is efficient if it allows for a minimum of 20 years of operation (situation solved today, to a great extent by the new Strategic Waste Management Plan).
