Abstract

The aim of the paper is to highlight the potential of old mining regions for the development of geotourism. The region of Central Spis was known for its long-standing mining and industrial activity. In the 1990s, a decline regime began, mining activities gradually ceased and the mines were closed. The region subsequently experienced an economic and social decline. The mining areas, mining buildings and facilities have been preserved in the individual villages. Mining landforms are also preserved, both on the surface and underground. Due to their rich mining history and preserved technical heritage, the sites under study have significant potential for the development of geotourism. There are other sites in their vicinity that are suitable for tourism development and should be linked into a broadly conceived offer. It is important to mention that there are also certain risks and threats which require a more in-depth analysis and assessment of their negative impacts. The result of our analysis is a passporting of the individual impacts and a subsequent assessment of the positive and negative impacts on geotourism development.
