Abstract

Blast pattern design has direct influence on the time consumption and construction cost of drilling and blasting of tunnels. Tunnel blasting is more complicated operation than open pit blasting because the only free surface that initial breakage can take place toward is the tunnel face. The most important operation in the tunnel blasting procedure is to create an opening in the face with the intention of develop another free surface in the rock. This is the function of the cut holes. The cuts can be classified in two groups: parallel hole and angle hole cuts. Two tunnel blasting design methods (Nitro Nobel and Energy transfer from explosive to rock) are based on these cut holes. The calculations of the required parameters in these methods are really time consuming and doing these computations manually may includes some mistakes. To reduce the time consumption and doing the calculations with more confidence, a computer software was produced. In this paper, we attempted to design blasting pattern of Bajgiran tunnel in Iran by using this software. Obtaining true results with a rapid procedure showed that the use of computer aided devices can lead to better and more accurate answers.
