DEVELOPMENT AND MODERNIZATION OF NATURAL GAS STORAGE IN BULGARIA
Abstract
The only one natural gas storage in Bulgaria - Underground Gas Storage Chiren requires modernization and development. A set of activities have been planned and implemented, covering research, technological and production activities. An overriding task and a top priority are to increase capacities - in volume and productivity of the storage. The aim of the research is to determine the necessary modern set of knowledge that will draw the attention of stakeholders to the possibility of modernization and increase the capacity of natural gas storage. The proposed research approach is applicable to existing and future strategic sites related to the storage and transportation of hydrocarbon products. The investment strategy of Bulgartransgaz has been developed and adopted in the Ten-Year Plan for the Development of the Natural Gas Network and Storage Infrastructure for the period 2020-2030. It will provide an opportunity to increase the use of natural gas in the country with the respective economic, social and environmental benefits, as well as to diversify gas supply sources and routes. This will also contribute to ensuring a competitive gas market and better selection of the participants on this market.
