Abstract

Currently mobile mining machines, including primary ones, such as drilling and bolting rigs, or used in underground mining of metal ores, are most commonly driven by internal combustion engines. Due to the large depth of mining, this type of drive provides a number of disadvantages, including a large generation of fumes, heat and noise. The solution to this problem seems to be the use of the electrical battery drives, similarly as is the case in motor vehicles. The article presents the assumptions and boundary conditions for the construction of an underground mining drilling rig with electrical battery drive. The main differences between the traditional design (with diesel engine) and battery-powered electric drive were described. The paper also shows the available construction technology of the batteries and highlights their strengths and weaknesses, i.e.. the impact of parameters such as battery capacity, mass, voltage, charging time or temperature. In addition, paper describes the proposed structure of a full battery drive system. The paper also presents data necessary for proper choice of power train parameters, regards to working conditions of underground drilling rig, such as required battery capacity. These data were determined on the basis of the monitoring equipment installed on the real rig working in an underground hard rock mine. Data presented in the article can also be useful in other kinds of construction improvements of drilling machines, as well as in optimization of the entire underground mining process of metal ores.
