Abstract

One of the greatest challenges in restoring the urban landscapes consists in getting data as accurate as possible on the historically evolving landscape. This case study of the historical ensemble of Ciacova, Timi? County in Romania, presents the methods for interpreting data from particular historical and archaeological research that contributed to establishing the principles for the restoration of the ensemble. On the one hand, the research provides the necessary data for the restoration process, on the other hand it reveals the disciplinary breadth of landscape architecture and the range of ways it works with historical, archaeological and related-fields data. The paper is meant to highlight the importance of complementary modes of knowledge, particularly of multidisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, when it comes to interventions within the historical landscape, within living places that inherit a series of transformations of form and significance, in order to meet today's urban challenges and societal needs. For the interpretation of the data obtained we chose to use a structure by chapters guided by general principles (interdependence of contained architectural objectives, anthropic and natural, cultural) that later led to solutions for the historical urban landscape intervention proper. Thus, the role of the landscape architect is comparable to that of a stage director who orchestrates the montage of a scene taking care of the artistic concept and the coherence of the play articulating the parts in a sustainable concept.
