THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS ON SOIL LOSS

Abstract

One of a country s most valuable natural resources is its soil, and since it cannot be replaced, it must be protected. In addition to being an important part of the environment with a variety of functions, it is crucial for agricultural and forestry productivity. Nevertheless, the soil is in danger due to a number of processes. In the Czech Republic, these are primarily water and wind erosion. Agroforestry systems are one of the options to reduce them. Furthermore, they can enhance water management, mitigate the effects of climate change, and provide a more human-friendly environment. It is a way of farming where the same piece of land is utilized for both agricultural production and the growth of trees. The two primary types are silvoarable agroforestry systems (cultivation of trees on arable land) and silvopastoral ones (trees are grown on permanent grassland or coppice). This paper deals with the impact of agroforestry systems on soil loss. On three research areas with different slopes (5%, 10%, and 15%), 3 m and 6 m wide agroforestry belts were designed in various combinations with grass belts and arable belts. It was observed that the design of the measures resulted in a significant reduction in soil loss. Additionally, it was found that agroforestry systems should be supplemented by other soil erosion control measures, e.g. contour farming, strip cropping or grass belts.
