ENERGY SAVING AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION BY INTEGRATING COGENERATION IN NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS
Abstract
The case study analyzed in the paper refers to a group of new buildings built near the campus of the University Politehnica of Bucharest. The UniversityпїЅs campus has its own cogeneration power plant equipped with two reciprocating engines using natural gas. Each engine generates 800 kWe of electricity for UniversityпїЅs own consumption and for selling it on electricity market. During the winter time the heat recovered from the two engines, is used within the district heating network of the UniversityпїЅs campus. During the period of the year when heating demand of the district heating network decreases to zero, all heat that can be recuperated from engines should be evacuated into atmosphere and the cogeneration units generate only power, leading to a lower overall efficiency of the plant. To increase the performance of the energy generating facility during the period with no heating demand the recovered heat from cogeneration units can be used for cold generation in absorption chillers, thus implementing a trigeneration concept. The authors have performed a technical-economic analysis of implementation of two absorption chillers into the system for cold water production. The cold water shall be used for space air conditioning in the group of new buildings built near the campus. The implementation of the proposed trigeneration solution does not imply any investment or changes within the new buildings. At the same time the solution can lead to reducing electricity consumption peaks caused by individual air conditioning unitsпїЅ utilization during summer time. The performed technical-economic analysis shows that the proposed trigeneration solution leads to increasing the energy and economic efficiency of the plant, as well as having a positive impact upon the environment due to the reduction of fossil fuel consumption.
