Abstract

In the context of the current climate change faced by mankind, a series of phenomena are emerging, which can pose problems to both several environmental aspects, including among others biodiversity and agricultural crops. Drought is a regional phenomenon which, through its impact on agriculture, can also have a bad influence on the economy. Apple farming, through its spreading area and its importance in human nutrition and health is also affected by this aspect. Based on high temperatures and a reduced amount of precipitation the leaves of trees may become yellow earlier than usual and the process of premature fruit fall is enhanced. This paper seeks to highlight how the apple orchards from the north-eastern region of Romania react to this phenomenon and from which perspective can these aspects be approached with methods of remote sensing, using Sentinel 2 satellite images or by what methods we can obtain results as conclusive as possible. The good resolution and the fact that these images hold 13 spectral bands demonstrate the promising application of Sentinel-2 data to ensure long-term monitoring of the drought effect under various land-use categories and vegetation that can help manage the environment in a sustainable manner.
