STUDY OF BIODEGRADATION OF LEATHER TANNING WITH CHROMIUM AND VEGETAL COMPOUNDS
Abstract
Unsustainable consumption and production pa tterns in the developed world have an increased generation of waste over many decades. One of the major environmental challenge is the enormous amount of waste generated from leather and footwear industries. The leather and footwear industr ies are diverse manufacturing sectors which employ a wide variety of materials to make products ranging from different types and styles of clothes and footwear. Over 40 di fferent materials can be used but leather represents the most used material. The leather is produced by tanning process and chromium or vegetal compounds can be used as tanning agents. However, chromium represents a highly toxic element suspec ted to be carcinogen and thus a major environmental issue. In the last years many methods for tanning process have been developed that use vegetal materials. The aim of this paper is to develop a comparative study regarding biodegradation in aqueous solution in aerobic condition of leat her tanning with chromium and vegetal compounds, and to assess the compliance with conformity criteria specific for leather waste capitalization by biodegradation in aqueous medium and aerobic conditions for a 100 days period. A mixture of nutritive salts c ontaining K, N, P, Na, Ca, and the leather as carbon source, while the inoculums is th e liquid extract of compost from leather waste disposal. In system was bubbling air fr ee of carbon dioxide, the rate flow varied between 1.5-2.5 L/s, at constant temperature 20В±0.5В°C. A series of parameters have been monitored: carbon dioxide resulted, pH, conductivity, TOC (total organic carbon) and TON (total organic nitrogen) in liquid phase.
