MARINE AND COASTAL EXPEDITION ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES OF THE RUSSIAN ARCTIC

Abstract

The article analyzes the field studies carried out in the last years in the Russian Arctic, where due to efforts of the state and business the scopes of field activities significantly increased. This is determined by climate changes, more active exploration of the Arctic shelf and development of shipping. Expeditions are carried out in the framework of the state federal and regional programs, projects of the companies of subsoil users (Gazprom, Rosneft) and international cooperation. Activities at some coastal scientific bases and centers are carried out the year-round. In 2017, about forty expeditions were carried out in the seas of the Russian Arctic with the use of research and other vessels, aviation and drifting ice. Besides, studies at the coastal scientific centers, stations and stationary bases were performed in the year-round mode or close to it. About 800 scientists and specialists from dozens research and educational Russian and non-Russian organizations participated in the field studies with involvement of young scientists and students. Investigations are also based on a recently established infrastructure, including the Russian Research Center on Spitsbergen archipelago, scientific stations ?Samoilovsky Island?, ?Cape Baranova Ice Base?, hydrometeorological observatory in Tiksi settlement and research vessels and other platforms. More than forty expeditions of basic and applied direction are carried out on an annual basis, in which hundreds of Russian and foreign specialists participate. Natural threats in the marine environment, on ice and in the land and underwater cryosphere are in the focus of studies for development of monitoring and forecasting facilities and risk management.
