Abstract

Buildings account for significant energy consumptions in the global consumptions, according to the International Energy Agency. The path towards 2050 is that of nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB), a path that should change the way that buildings are designed in current practice. The design of a buildingпїЅs envelope is always focusing more on the heat transfer of top components (i.e. exterior walls, terraces, roofs) and less on the heat transfer in bottom components (i.e. floors on the ground, walls in contact with the ground). Above ground components got more attention in the past years, from the thermal performance point of view, and serious optimization was made to decrease the heat losses through those elements. The offset of that optimization are the heat losses that increased in the earth- contact components. The paper brings a study on several thermal optimized solutions for earth-contact components, solutions that should be implemented in current practice in order to obtain the desired building stock of nZEB.
