LABORATORY TESTS OF THE SELECTED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL STABILIZED WITH A ROAD BINDER

Abstract

The use of local soil as well as the recycling of existing structures such as road pavements using hydraulic binders is a beneficial technical solution, both in terms of economics and protection of the EarthпїЅs natural resources. Parameters of the soil stabilized with binders significantly affect the load bearing capacity and durability of the built structures. One of the important mechanical parameters applied in the analysis and design of soil structures is the modulus. Determination of the exact value of this parameter is related to the need to precisely determine the strains present in the specimen of material under load. In the presented study of the elasticity modulus of the soil stabilized with a road binder, a modern non-contact method for measuring the deformations of the specimen surface under test was used. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was implemented. The measurement results allowed for the determination of the soil mechanical parameters: the elasticity modulus, Poisson's ratio and compressive and tensile strength. These parameters are applied in geotechnics in the design of the strengthening of the soil for constructions. One of the conclusions flowing from the tests is the finding that the DIC method allows for the determination of displacements and strains of soil specimens in any direction and at any point, which significantly facilitates streamlining and speeding up the testing procedures in comparison with traditional methods using strain gauge techniques.
