Abstract

This paper comprehensively analyze the geology and tectonic settings of the western part of Albania favoring erosion process. A particular attention is paid to the neotectonics of the outer zones, as the most active one. Furthermore, data on intense geodynamics and displacement rates of coastal areas are discussed against the major regional tectonic blocs. Intense seismic activity, along the Adriatic-Ionian seismogenic belt, is characterized by more than 6 strong earthquakes (M > 6.0), recorded during the last century. Geomorphology of the Adriatic-Ionian coastline ecosystem consists of beaches, lagoons, marshes and estuaries of many rivers, along 380 km. Neocene structures oriented NNW-SSE plunges towards the Adriatic Sea, favoring a very complex coastline buildup of open пїЅhorseshoeпїЅ bays towards the northwest. Here an intense erosion process is present, especially along the cumulative coastline, in Durresi, Porto Romano, Semani and Patoku. During the last decade it has taken an increased concern. The goal of this work is to evidence and analyze the main factors within the neotectonics framework.
