Abstract

At present the traffic lights are common part of the road intersections. This type of traffic control has many advantages: increase in traffic safety, clearly defined driving preference, increase in intersection capacity etc. On the other hand the intersections with traffic lights can show also some disadvantages, for example wrong behaviour of road participants, problem with traffic flow continuity, often due to wrong signal program, traffic volumes or geometric and building parameters of intersection, economic and operation costs. Signal control can be used also for control of pedestrian crossings, cyclist crossings, service roads etc. The intersections with traffic lights, then, are modern type of road control. The common intersections with only vertical and horizontal traffic signs are rebuilt to intersections with traffic lights. The main reason is the traffic safety and capacity. This paper describes the results of safety and capacity analyses of intersection with traffic lights and with tram traffic. This intersection has been controlled by traffic lights since 2016. The article therefore deals with the comparison of the state without traffic lights and with ones. There are the capacity assessment, analyses of traffic accident and traffic conflicts etc. in this intersection analysis. There is also the possible design of building and traffic modifications.
