EFFECTIVENESS OF SHIPS PROPULSION OPERATING ON THE ALTERNATIVE FUELS TO HYDROCARBON FUELS.

Abstract

In this paper relationships of vessels and the environment, in which exploitation tasks are carried out, were presented. It was shown how important is rational choice of propulsion unit to construct a vessel which should be provided with proper energy to do the tasks given. Vessels are the biggest means of transport, then they also have a profound influence on natural environment. That is why an attempt of analysis was made whether it is possible to replace hydrocarbon liquid fuels with alternative ones. For this purpose an analysis of alternative fuels' (mostly biofuels) exploitational usefulness was made. A complex problem of assessment of alternative fuels was presented in an economical, ecological and safety aspect. The ambiguities of terms used in economical accounts based on measurable values, omitting unmeasurable values such as health or social dimension are presented. There is very important for the continuity of fuel supplies and for the safety of the propulsion units to ensure availability and repeatability of the alternative fuel in relation to hydrocarbon fuel. Exemplary criteria of choosing fuels to empower propulsion systems of vessels which provide both safety of sailing, protection of the natural environment and efficiency adequate to the exploitation tasks assigned, were shown in the paper.
