Abstract

Electrical installations in spaces classified as being in danger of explosive atmospheres have special characteristics to correspond to operation in such atmospheres. For safety reasons in these areas, it is essential that during the lifetime of these installations, the integrity of these special characteristics be maintained. The assessment of explosion-protected electrical equipment within the scope of certification is of paramount importance in view of the risk of explosion which must be minimized to ensure the safety of life and health of workers and to prevent damage to property and the environment, as well as the free movement of goods when they meet the essential safety requirements at European level. Equipment in explosion-proof construction presents certain specific technical solutions on which explosion protection is based, known as the type of protection (summarizing the measures applied to the construction of electrical apparatus to prevent ignition of the surrounding explosive atmosphere). This paper aims to highlight the new aspects concerning the inspection and maintenance of equipment intended for use in explosive gaseous atmospheres, since the current edition includes some significant technical changes compared to the previous one. At the same time this paper aims to give some examples of practical application of the inspection requirements on some equipment in explosion-protected construction.
