MARINE LONG STROKE ENGINES PISTON RINGS WEAR ANALYSIS AT REAL OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS.
Abstract
During operation of Marine Long Stroke Engines used as a ships main propulsion, an excessive wear of cylinder liners and piston rings and problems associated with scuffing have frequently occurred. Such failures share the highest proportion in statistics of all engines failures. In order to prevent all these problems, it is necessary to conduct assessments of cylinder liners and piston rings condition frequently, during normal operation of engines. To identify wear factors of piston rings analyzed the wear records of piston rings of the main propulsion long stroke engine installed on selected ship. On the basis of the measurements of non-ferrous layer main engine pistons rings and inspections of cylinder liners, the trends of piston rings wear have been presented in the paper. Obtained trends and verification of cylinder liners condition can be easy implemented to optimize cylinder oil feeding rates of various types and sizes long stroke engines at the typical operating conditions of these engines. Specifically adjusted cylinder oil feed rate for each engine can reduce number of cylinder liners pistons and piston rings failures and reduce total cylinder oil consumption, reduce emission of harmful substances to atmosphere which comes from unburnt cylinder oil, especially chemicals added to cylinder oils as improvement additives.
