GLOBAL TRENDS IN IMPLENTENTING THE INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS CONCEPT IN THE STEEL SECTOR
Abstract
In order to preserve its competitiveness and retain the current number of work places in the European steel industry as well as to meet stricter emission standards, the implementation of industrial symbiosis activities is an unavoidable measure. The objective of this paper is to identify the best industrial symbiosis enabling practices done in the steel industry worldwide. For this purpose, a review of successful industrial symbiosis case studies in the steel industry was performed. For the sake of comparability, primary emphasis was put on reviewing symbiotic activities of integrated steel mills with an annual crude steel production capacity above 4 million tons. In total, 11 steelmaker sites, from 6 different countries, were analysed. The reviewed sites are assessed based on their current symbiotic exchanges as well as their plans to extend the current industrial symbiosis activities. Among the 59 documented industrial symbiosis stream exchanges analysed in this review, 5 straightforward synergetic solutions are identified.
