Abstract

In this study, the boric aci d extraction from colemanite in ammonium chloride was studied and the effects of parameters such as the leaching temperature, ammonium chloride concentration, solid/liquid ratio a nd leaching time were investigated on the boric acid extraction from colemanite. Statistical design of experiments and the analysis of variance were carried out. The experiments were performed in a 500-mL cylindrical glass reactor equipped with a mechanical stirrer, a thermostat for controlling the leaching temperature, and a condenser to a void the loss of solution by evaporation at atmospheric pressure. A simple linear mathematical model has been developed in order to predict the boric acid extraction from colemanite for many operating conditions that were not directly tested. The amount of B 2O3 leached increased with increasing temperature, time and ammonium chloride concentration and it also increased with decreasing solid/liquid ratio. The optimum c onditions were found to be as follows: leaching temperature, 90 В°C; solid/liquid ratio, 2.5%; ammonium chloride concentration, 1.5 M; leaching time, 25 min. The boric acid extraction efficiency from colemanite was approximately 90.7% under the optimum conditions. Reaction products were found to be boric acid, ammonia, and calcium chloride.
