HEAVY METALS POLLUTION FROM MINING INDUSTRY IN THE WATERSHED OF THE MATI RIVER, ALBANIA

Abstract

Heavy metals as persistent pollutants of the aquatic ecosystems become a global issue of concern and are consistently increasing due to urbanization and industrialization. The aim of this study was to determine the heavy metals content in the water of the Mati River. Heavy metal levels were monitored during 2024 on four campaigns along the Mati River. Water samples were collected from five stations, covering the whole watershed area. Sample analyses were performed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, (GF-AAS). This watershed has a large chromium smelter zone and several chromium and cooper mines. The Mati River receives a large amount of mineral industry and was contaminated compared to other rivers of Albania. Their content in water resulted in high levels, with an order of distribution as follows: Cu less thanCd less thanPb less thanCr less thanNi. Based in heavy metals concentration and in Directive 2000/60/EC of the EU, the results obtained show that the content of copper, cadmium, lead, chromium and nickel are quite high, classifying the water of Mati River polluted. Systematic monitoring programs are needed to understand the present environmental state of Albanian rivers to characterize the main sources of pollution and to lay the basis for guidelines to improve the ecological situation of ecosystems.
