DEPOSITION CHEMISTRY IN CONIFEROUS STANDS IN BULGARIA
Abstract
An investigation of atmospheric deposition and acid/base balance was carried out. The throughfall chemistry for the fluxes of Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, SO42?, NO3? and NH4+ ions in six coniferous stands in Bulgaria in a 2017 year was compared. Site Petrohan and Plana are used for long-term ecological monitoring and are sites included in LTER network, as well. The amount of acid throughfall deposition was higher than the base deposition fluxes in all study coniferous stands, except a site Plana. That revealed a high potential risk in the future, not only for the soils but for the structure and functioning of the whole ecosystems. The total inorganic N-containing deposition was higher than sulfates for all study sites excluding the site Petrohan. The major acidifying ion under a canopy of coniferous stands was SO42?, followed by ammonium and nitrate. The acid throughfall deposition fluxes were neutralized mainly by Ca2+ and K+ ions in precipitation. The best acid/base balance was found for the site Plana only with Scots Pine species.
