EVOLUTION AND PROBLEMS CONCERNING THE DEVELOPMENT OF TIMISOARA METROPOLITAN AREA (ROMANIA). A CASE STUDY - GIROC COMMUNE
Abstract
In the last twenty years Timisoara proved to be one of the main development centers of Romania, and became the most important economic region in the western part of the country. As part of this evolution the neighbouring settlements of the city began to change, as they became part of a greater new urban system. At first, all initiatives came from the part of investors, mainly based in Timisoara, who were looking for cheap land surfaces for their future projects. Though new investments represented great possibilities for Giroc (formerly an agricultural settlement), in time significant problems appeared concerning society, urban structure and the ecological system of the place. Regrettably, solutions did not follow the more and more visible dysfunctions of the local urban system. It became more and more evident that general ecological principles were not respected, and gray spaces began to prevail over green areas, which caused a great loss in biodiversity. In the meantime problems were signaled concerning traffic in the area, which became in time difficult and unpredictable. Giroc became part of the nearly uncontrolled urban sprawl of Timisoara. Lately, on the part of the local town-hall, there is a positive approach of the problems. The goal is to create new green spaces, which could satisfy the needs of the growing local community. This paper is focusing on the present and future problems of Giroc, concerning urban landscape development, in accordance with ecological principals.
