MODERN LAND CONSOLIDATIONS IN POLAND - NEW IDEAS, INNOVATIONS, AND TRENDS
Abstract
This study presents the role and significance of the land consolidation procedure in Poland, one of the six largest EU countries in terms of the surface area, and in Bulgaria. The consolidation traditions in Poland date back to the beginning of the last century and have been evolving along with dynamic social and technological changes. Currently, rural areas in Poland account for over 90% of the countryпїЅs area; therefore, it has been necessary for land consolidations to be transformed, over decades, into a multi-functional, modern tool that helps improve the farming conditions in locations where profitable agricultural farms are likely to operate; moreover, they provide an opportunity for the development of local communities in areas with no agricultural production markets, yet endowed with rich natural, landscape, historical and cultural, and environmental assets. In recent years, land consolidations have also begun to play an important role in protection against the effects of natural hazards such as inter alia floods, fires, and landslides, as well as in activities aimed at reconstruction.
