Abstract

Currently the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology is more and more frequently used as a tool for evaluating the environmental performance of products or services. Conducting the LCA is particularly important and valuable for a new product, process or technology. That is also applied for research on the innovative solutions or process proposals. The ENVIREE project funded from the ERA-MIN programme within the 2nd Joint Call aims at complete recovery process proposal of REE (rare earths elements) from tailings and mining waste. A separate work package within the project is dedicated to the environmental impact and economic feasibility in order to have a complete holistic view of the proposed innovative processes. Life cycle assessment is usually conducted in four stages: goal and scope, life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment and interpretation. LCA it is an iterative tool therefore the firstly defined goal, scope, functional unit, system boundaries could be reviewed and adjusted to the findings of the subsequent stages. Moreover LCA is being done as an interactive process parallel to the work within other work packages of the ENVIREE project. Therefore the preliminary set goal and scope of LCA needs to be verified according to the problems and results achieved within the project development.
