CHARACTERISTICS OF SOIL SURFACE HORIZONS IN FOREST LANDS IN LATVIA
Abstract
Soil is an essential component of ecosystems, one of the most important natural resources and a significant factor in maintaining ecosystem health and biodiversity. Since 2002, the LUCAS (Land Use/Cover Area Frame Statistical Survey) project has been regularly implemented in the European Union to obtain data on changes in land cover and land use patterns, various environmental indicators, as well as indicators characterizing soil properties. Field studies were conducted and soil samples were taken within the framework of the LUCAS project in 2009, 2015 and 2018. For the analysis of soil characteristics, 107 sample plots in forest lands throughout the territory of Latvia were selected for the study. Soil samples were taken during the growing season from May to September. In 2009 and 2015, soil samples of surface horizons were taken at a single depth of 0 20 cm (in 2018 at two depths 0-10 and 10-20 cm). In each plot, soil samples were taken in five replicates. At the end of the survey, soil samples were sent to the Joint Research Centre laboratory, where soil properties were analyzed. During the study, the correlation between the soil characteristics obtained in LUCAS surveys and the structure of the forest stands has been identified. All analyzed soil properties significantly differ (p ess than 0.05) depending on the forest site type. Such soil parameters as the clay particle content, pH H2O, pH KCl, N-total and K content are significantly depending on the dominant tree species in the forest.
