Abstract

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of processing parameters such as pressing and sintering time on microstructural characteristics including porosity and microstructure of some iron-based powder metallurgy (PM) materials. The powders used in this study are prealloyed iron-based powders. The particle size of the powders is ranging from 45 to 150 ?m. Following mixing the powders with zinc stearate 1% for 30 minutes, the studied powders were single pressed in a die at a pressure of 600 MPa. Zn-stearate was added as a lubricant. By pressing is obtaining cylindrical green compacts with 8 mm diameter and 6 mm height. Following pressing the green compacts were subject to sintering. Sintering is a heat treatment applied to products obtained by powder metallurgy route to improve strength by bonding particles and reducing porosity. In case of the analyzed specimens, the sintering was carried out in a laboratory furnace at 1150пїЅ C for 90 and 120 minutes. The porosity of the pressed and sintered samples were analyzed according to their microstructural characteristics and chemical composition. The porosity is decreasing with increasing pressure and sintering time.
