Abstract

At present moment, Bulgarian regulatory documents lack rainfall hyetographs that can be used in computer models of sewer networks. In the conditions of climate change and the occurrence of extreme precipitation phenomena, this leads to difficulties in the application of sewer network modeling in solving engineering problems. It is not possible to perform a normatively defined determination of hydraulically overloaded sections of the sewer network, as well as to determine the expected frequency of flooding and flood risk in urban areas. In this regard, it was necessary to review and evaluate both the information available in Bulgaria on intense precipitation, and a review of model hyetographs from world practice, which can be proposed for Bulgaria. This paper analyzes and evaluates the main methods for generating synthetic rainfall hyetograph that can be applied to the territory of the country. Due to the peculiarities of the method of collecting and processing data on intense precipitation, at present, the use of the DWA-A 118E methodology is proposed for creating model hyetograph of Euler Type I and Euler Type II for precipitation with different return periods. Additionally, the creation of an Euler Type III hyetograph is proposed, in which the location of the peak can be specified by the designer. In addition, the developed model hyetographs for different return periods have been implementated in the sewer networks of three settlements in Bulgaria. Based on the results of the hydraulic simulations, conclusions were drawn about the applicability of each type of hyetograph.
