ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFICIENT APPLICATIONS OF KARELIA-S TALC-BEARING ROCKS BASED ON GEOLOGO-TECHNOLOGICAL DATA
Abstract
The possible efficient application of Karelia?s talc-bearing rocks is assessed. Two groups of talc-bearing rocks: 1) talc ores subjected to flotation dressing for talc production and 2) soapstone containing chlorite, which, like talc, forms foliated-imbricate aggregates and is hard to separate upon dressing. High-quality reagent-free micronized concentrate (microtalc), which can be used for the production of technical rubber articles, plastics and ceramics, was produced using a flow chart developed for Svetloozersk talc ores (flotation-magnetic dressing and micronization). The mineral and chemical composition of talc-bearing rocks was analyzed and phase formation upon their thermal treatment was studied using electron microscopy, X-ray phase analysis and derivatography. These rocks were found to be a promising raw material for the production of highly durable ceramic facing tiles and heat-insulating material. The results of the study of heat-resistant materials from fine-fractional talco-chlorite schists (overburden of the Kostomuksha iron deposit) with various binders, such as Cambrian clay, Portland cement and liquid glass, used to reduce the cost of stationary furnace-type heat accumulators are reported.
