Abstract

The purpose of this research is to vertically define the aquifers from the Buzau River alluvial fan. The necessary information was collected from hydrogeological boreholes and it consists of the lithology encountered, the well design, more specifically the location of the screen, and the hydraulic head. In the first part, the studied area was divided by creating several well alignments, which were used to create cross-sections through the alluvial fan. The resulting profiles present the correlation between the lithology data encountered in the individual boreholes. The profiles were used to identify the processes that culminated in the formation of the alluvial fan and more importantly to highlight the porous-permeable rocks that can contain water. By studying the sections it was possible to identify the phreatic aquifer that can be found from the water table until a depth of approximately 28 m. This groundwater structure is mostly unconfined, apart of an eastern area where from the topographic surface until the permeable rocks there is a layer of 5-8 m consisting of clay, marl and/or loess. The knowledge of the extent of the aquifer structure is useful to create a future conceptual model of the Buzau River alluvial fan, which will permit the simulation of flow and pollutant transport. The resulting model will allow to design an efficient abstraction regime of groundwater resources and to assess the impact of human activities on this hydrogeological structure.
