Abstract

Most of the coastal zones in Europe are under the high level of anthropogenic pressure. Intensive use can lead to a devaluation of the natural capital of these zones and negatively affect the social and economic balance. These issues cannot be solved by the South-Eastern Baltic Region States separately (e.g. common natural and cultural heritage, transfers of pollutants and sediments, tourist flows, maritime safety) and requires international collaboration. One of the ways to ensure sustainable development of the coastal zone is preparation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management projects for different programs and activities of the coastal zone. But still there is a challenge to ensure effectiveness of such projects implementation. Therefore the sustainable development indicators objectively showing the state of economical-socialnatural environment of the coastal zone are used. South-Eastern Baltic coast typologically belongs to open sandy coast with similar geo-, morphological and dynamic features and common problems of erosion, sand dynamics and economical development. The coasts of the Pomorskie Voivodship, Kaliningrad Oblast and Klaipeda County (Lithuania) comprise unified coastal strip. The SDI-4-SEB project was initiated for implementing the essential methodological tools that foster the strategies of integrated coastal zone management in all three countries of the South-Eastern Baltic following the principles and criteria of sustainable development.
