HYDRAULIC DESING/ MODELING OF BRIDGES USING HEC RAS
Abstract
With the designing of the A2 state road, section Kriva Palanka-Deve Bair, the route of the road intersects the Kriva Reka River in four spots. The bridging of the river in these spots is envisaged with bridge structures. The bridge structures are placed in sequence at a relatively short distance from each other (the distance between the first and the last bridge is about 600 m). In order to define the impact of the bridge structures on the river waterline and the environment, as well as the impact of the river on bridge structure stability and the road base, a detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of the Kriva Reka River was made for the section where these bridges are envisaged. The aim of this work is to make Hydrologic analysis of the Kriva Reka river catchment area to the said section, and Hydraulic analysis of the Kriva Reka River on the section from the first to the last bridge by modeling the river with the HEC RAS - River Analysis System computer program. The Hydrologic analysis of the river was made for the catchment area, upstream of this section, and the hydraulic analysis was made by modeling 700 m of the river which cover this section. The hydrologic analysis defines the normative quantities of water for the hydraulic dimensioning of the bridge structures. For this purpose, the Kriva Reka river catchment area was analyzed upstream from the most downstream spot of the said section (the last bridge) by determining the catchment area area with DTM (Digital Terrain Model) (30x30 m), by applying SWAT, hydrologic analysis module from the geographic information software GIS. The physical and geographical characteristics of the catchment area were determined, and the analysis of the use of land in the catchment area was made with CORINE Layer Classification. The flow regime of the Kriva Reka River was analyzed with measured data on the flow from the hydrologic stations in the village of Zhidilovo. The hydraulic modeling of the said section from the Kriva Reka River was made by using HEC RAS for existing and designed condition. The designed condition also includes measures envisaged for improvement of the water picture of the Kriva Reka River and bridge structure safety, which are result of the hydraulic analyses. The results of these analyses are presented in tables and charts.
