Abstract

Mudstone formation samples from Crete, GREECE are investigatedwith regard to their suitability as raw materials for rammed earth and adobe production. This paper deals with the mineralogical composition, soil particle size distribution of samples, as well as the analysis of sample consistency and compressive strength of rammed earth cube samples. Quartz and clay minerals are the major mineralogical constituents, whereas micas, chlorites, iron-oxides and hydroxides, carbonates and feldspars were detected in various amounts. The samples are evaluated, as to their suitability for rammed earth and adobe production, on the basis of their soil particle size distribution and mineralogical composition. All samples have suitable compressive strengths to satisfy the minimum requirement of 2.0 MPa of European Standards. Most of the materials examined that have sand contents smaller than 60\% are suitable for stabilisation as rammed earth and adobe.
