Abstract

The aim of this article is to describe the possibility of increasing the service life of the rod eye on a tilting platform that is used to tilt heavy barrels between the two differences in heights in transport lines. This mode of transport was selected for the lack of space in a given area of a production line, which does not allow the implementation of an inclined plane, which would be structurally easier. Rotating those barrels by 90пїЅ that is achieved during this way of transport, is desired for subsequent technological reasons. The load, which in the course of transporting the rod is subjected to, is variable depending on the angle of tilt. For this reason any static assessment of this rod is inadequate. In the course of the operation the original rod was overloaded and the place of fracture showed also a fatigue failure. The shape and material optimization of the original rod removed these deficiencies. Thanks to a different shape design the maximum stress in the main section of the rod was considerably reduced. Another important role here plays the way of fitting the clevis pin in the eye of rod. The choice of material enabled increasing the strength and fatigue limit of this element. A suitable design of the rod has a positive effect on the overall reliability of the machine, on its economic indicators, and also on its operational safety.
