Abstract

The article presents data on the role of organic matter as the primary source of oil and gas formation. It provides a general overview of scientific research on the theory of the organic origin of hydrocarbons. The methodological part of the study is based on guidelines for determining the distribution patterns of organic matter in formations of various types, using the values of the formation-equivalent. The formation-equivalent is understood as the aggregation of all forms of organic matter of any type into a conditional layer. Based on core material collected from 52 areas, the thickness of the formation-equivalent of organic matter within the study area was calculated. A map of the distribution of the formation-equivalent thickness across the region was compiled. As a result, a general direct relationship is identified between the values of the organic matter formation-equivalent and gas accumulation zones, particularly in terms of significant reserves and total gas resources. The analysis of trap filling coefficients primarily indicates a direct relationship between the trap filling coefficient and the initial explored gas reserves. Consideration of gas trap filling coefficients shows that the most gas-filled traps in the region are located in the uplifted flanks of flexural-fault zones.
