DESIGNING A PILOT SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT FOR SMALL LOCALITIES
Abstract
Sewage treatment plants (STPs) have been constructed in most places to reduce the degradation of water quality and ensure a healthy environment. STPs are major investments due to the high capital required to build them as well as their high operating and maintenance costs. Small and isolated villages or settlements with low population densities can be served by decentralized systems, which are simple and have low costs. While functioning within general environment protection activities, wastewater originating from small localities should be processed through treatment plants that are simple, economic, and efficiently reduce pollution factors; thereby preventing the spread of infectious diseases, unpleasant smells, and damaging gases. The main objective of this paper is to design a pilot STP for small or very small localities (up to 500 inhabitants) such as villages, communes, hotels, and camps. The example pilot plant is located inside the STP in Timisoara, Romania and ensures influent wastewater is discharged at standardized parameters. This paper consists of a brief overview of the parameters for wastewater treatment design and different technologies, followed by a detailed section on each component explaining the specific formulas of the design and applied-treatment processes. The pilot STP efficiency will be experimentally validated in a future research work.
