STUDIES ON THE COLOR VARIABILITY IN POPULATION OF DIABROTICA VIRGIFERA VIRGIFERA LECONTE (INSECTA: COLEOPTERA) AND CORRELATION WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF CORN HYBRIDS
Abstract
One of the species with the negative impact for corn crops in Europe is the coleopteran insect of Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (LeConte). The invasiveness but also the damage caused by adults can reduce the production of corn grain visible. By monitoring activities organized at local or national level (in Romania) often made confusion because coloristic variety intraspecific observed in insect populations. To identify the causes of color variability morphological studies were done on several samples present in different fields with corn hybrids. They were addressed both issues requiring macroscopic studies and information about hybrid corn but studies of detail beetles. In this regard we were organized eight experimental fields comprising each a hybrid corn. Choosing corn hybrids was done taking into account the FAO maturity category, such as extra-early, semi-early, early and semi-late types. Adult insects were collected from each field using sticky traps. To differentiate males from females to follow a basic morphological characteristics such as the final segment of the abdomen. The results revealed several color groups in relation to the standard characteristics described in the literature. In all fields are predominantly female. They had more color combinations than males. The color palette of elytra ranged from to each hybrid/field. Hybrids with delayed maturity scored only five groups of females and four males while early hybrids have been allocated less color combinations. However most beetles (males and females) studies were within the standard colors with a percentage of 63.78 and 53.45 respectively. Also there was a correlation between the color of corn silk and ground color of beetles.
