Abstract

Bioluminescence field in the Black Sea is formed mainly by accumulations of luminous dinoflagellates, which along with other microalgae are an important component of marine ecosystems. The study of bioluminescence field variability, which reflects the structural and functional parameters of phytoplankton, redounds to a more detailed insight into its spatial and temporal heterogeneity. The article presents the analysis of bioluminescence field structure, measured in five marine expeditions onboard the research vessel ?Professor Vodyanitskiy? in different seasons from November 2015 to July 2016 in the northern Black Sea region. Bioluminescence field intensity was analyzed by multiple bathyphotometric probing us-ing the device complex ?Salpa?, which enables to register thermal-haline structure of water. Its use along with traditional methods (phytoplankton sampling) makes assessment of the ecosystems? state more effective. The analysis includes data of the monthly 6-year monitoring in the water area near by Sevastopol, conducted from 2009 to 2014. Seasonal and interannual variability of integral characteristics and vertical structure of bioluminescence field indicative of the vertical distribution of dinoflagellates was studied. According to satellite-derived data, characteristics of seasonal variability of bioluminescence and sea surface temperature were found to be consistent. The layers of maximal dinoflagellates accumulations were distinguished. Seasonal variability of bioluminescence field was assessed against interannual and spatial one.
