EVALUATION OF WATER QUALITY AND AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS FROM THE EASTERN PART OF JIU VALLEY
Abstract
Appropriate protection of the environment, as well as of the most vulnerable environmental factor, water, is impossible without the achievement of a civilization's progress in all its aspects (economic, social, etc.). Also, the lack of adequate economic support may lead to the impossibility of carrying out actions to protect and conserve water resources. Activities from eastern part of the Jiu Valley, constituted as integrated parts of economic growth and development, invariably degrade, through the specificity of the processes, the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the waters in the East Jiu river basin. The relative nature of the qualitative assessment of surface water depends on a number of criteria, methods and procedures that vary from one country to another. The paper addresses the concepts of assessing the quality of aquatic ecosystems in the East Jiu river basin, illustrated by indicators that quantify the degree of pollution of waters with different hazardous substances. The paper also presents a preliminary assessment of the effluent quality of the East Jiu river and the classification in the quality classes according to the legislation in force.
