Abstract

The subject of this project is to evaluate precipitation variability, trends and projections due to climate change in north-w estern Bulgaria as part of the changes in the early 21st century in that area. Studies in recent years show a decline of precipitation for the Balkans and Bulgaria in particular. The re duction in rainfall amounts is typical for the last 10 years of the 20th century and continues into the early 21st century. Examination models of the precipitation amount indicate a trend of increasing of the dry periods for the Balkans. The consequences are adverse environmental changes. Irregular distribution of precipitation is important for agriculture, construction works, engineering work, municipal and regional projects related to the proper use and construction of drainage facilities. The data used here covers the period 1981 - 2009, compared with the period 1961 - 1990. This data indicates variations in the quantities and seasonality of precipitation. This data reveals certain trends in North West Bulgaria. Monitoring of climate change involves the application of different methods for integration of precipitation.
